Enzo Elia was born in Italy. Aged 13, he discovered the world of music, and started to buy and collect vinyl. He didn’t like football, and instead spent his time putting music on the radio, connecting with people, jumping between record stores, and always searching for the best music of the moment.
He has only ever played vinyl, because music contains memories and every record’s feel reminds him of something special. "An old record always has something," he says, "I love the warm and dirty analogue flavour of records and turntables".
Enzo grew up playing with the rhythms of Motown and Italo Disco in his bedroom, and then fell in love with House Music and Detroit Techno. Some of the records that he bought as he was starting out - released by great labels like DJ International, Underground Resistance, Strictly Rhythm, and Chicago Trax - are still a must-have in his record bag. Today he has became even more of a vinyl hunter and collector because he believes that in our age of instant communication what is produced in the immediate moment has no value compared to what has remained in the collective memory.
The degree of slowness is directly proportional to the intensity of memory.
(Milan Kundera, Slowness)
Later on Enzo studied music at Bologna University of the Arts. During this phase he started to play more often and got to know some of the most important DJs of the Italian scene.
Since 2004 he has also produced his own music and maintained a collaboration with Hell Yeah and Youngodds - labels with which he has released several works. In addition he has worked as producer for Be As One, Lion1 and many others, and as remixer for great producers like Roland Clark, Oliver Koletzky, Umek and DJ Pierre.
Many important DJs love and play Enzo’s music. His work is supported by great names, notably his latest single “Touch” (Hell Yeah), which has been a small underground hit, supported by Carl Cox, Kenny Larkin, Osunlade, DJ Hell and many others.
Recently he moved to Berlin, where he is working on a new project together with Musician/Producer Roskow Kretschmann under the name of “EL FREAKADELL”. It’s all about Disco, Soul, and House, with a retro-feel. Their first work, “I got you”, will be released by the legendary Compost label.
At the same time, he has recently become a member of Balearic Gabba Sound System - a nonsense dream team composed of peeDoo, E-the-Hot, Bjorn Torske, and others. Together they create a kaleidoscopic sound, blending and contrasting diverse genres. Following the philosophy of this collective, Enzo is producing new re-edits of old classic Techno and House tracks, which are coming out soon on Hell Yeah records.
Today he’s still got vinyl-addict-ears, is always switched on to new music, and still jumping between record stores and the Berlin flea markets.
